Why offline

The best reading happens where the signal does not reach.

Readers download novels for real reasons: dead zones, data caps, and the simple preference for a library that belongs to the device it lives on.

Travel and flights

Airplane mode should not mean no reading. Saved chapters, the Codex, and downloaded voices all work at 30,000 feet.

Commutes and dead zones

Subway tunnels, rural roads, and spotty buildings stop being interruptions when the whole book is already on your phone.

Data caps and throttling

A long serial re-fetched page by page adds up. Download once on Wi-Fi, then read for weeks without touching your plan.

Privacy by default

An app that works offline is an app that does not need to phone home about what you read or when you read it.

The bar

Offline reading is more than a bookmark.

Many novel apps claim offline support but only remember your place in a cloud library. True offline reading means the content and the features around it all survive airplane mode.

  • Chapters stored on the device, not just bookmarked links that reload over the network.
  • Reading progress, notes, and library state kept locally so nothing depends on an account.
  • Companion features that run on device: character profiles, summaries, and timeline recall that still work in airplane mode.
  • Voices that are downloaded once and synthesized locally, instead of audio streamed from a server.

Offline, end to end

Everything on this list works in airplane mode.

StoryCodex is built local-first: the reader, the Codex, and the voices are all on-device features, not streaming services with an offline toggle.

Bulk chapter saving

Queue hundreds of web novel chapters for offline storage in one pass before a trip, instead of downloading chapter by chapter.

Codex that works offline

Character profiles, aliases, factions, timeline events, and chapter summaries all live on device and stay searchable with no connection.

Fully offline neural TTS

Download a Piper, Kokoro, or Supertonic voice once, then listen to natural narration offline in roughly 31 languages.

Your own files, no network

Import EPUB, PDF, and TXT directly to your library. Files never leave the device and every feature works on them offline.

Honest scope: offline covers everything already on your device. Importing new chapters from the web and optional StoryCodex Cloud AI credits need a connection, and voices require a one-time download before first use.

Answers

Offline reading questions, answered.

Do I need an internet connection to read in StoryCodex?

No, not for anything already on your device. Saved web novel chapters, imported EPUB/PDF/TXT files, reading progress, and the entire Codex work with zero connectivity. You only need a connection to import new chapters or fetch updates.

Does text-to-speech work offline?

Yes. StoryCodex uses on-device neural engines (Piper, Kokoro, and Supertonic). After a one-time voice download, narration is synthesized locally, so listening on a plane uses no data and sends nothing anywhere.

How much can I save for offline reading?

As much as your storage allows. Web novel chapters are plain text and very small, so saving an entire 1,500-chapter serial typically takes less space than a handful of photos.

Is anything not available offline?

Two things need a connection: importing new chapters from the web, and optional StoryCodex Cloud credits for hosted AI analysis. On-device analysis, the Codex, and downloaded voices all work offline.
